SHIT QUEER GRRRLS SAY
by trashydyke //// music by sleater-kinney
*just a note on the title: it’s “queer grrrls” as opposed to “queer” because it’s leaning more towards a female-identified experience and i didn’t want to co-op or appropriate any experiences that aren’t mine (because i’m female-identified and queer-identified) but there are definitely things in here that are pretty widely applicable to the queer community
also as with everything else in the “shit girls say” phenomenon this is a PARODY of things i hear a lot in the queer community - some of them good, some of them narrow-minded, some of them really silly.
Because I hang out with a lot of queer grrls and love them so.
When I was in fourth grade, I was sitting with my cello, waiting for my orchestra concert to begin. The cello was on the floor, but I was seated in my section in a long dress with my knees spread wide, and my elbows on my thighs. My mom - in the audience - gestured to me…

Ella Fitzgerald
&Marilyn MonroeMarilyn Monroe fans probably know this story, but for those of you that don’t:
Marilyn was a big supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. Ella Fitzgerald was one of Marilyn’s idols and a major inspiration. However, the Mocambo nightclub in West Hollywood, the most popular dance spot at the time, refused to let Ella perform there because she was black. Outraged, Marilyn told the owners that if they would let Ella perform, she would be there in the front row, every time Ella was onstage. She did, and the two became friends.
According to the great Ella Fitzgerald:
“I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt; it was because of her that I played the Mocambo, a very popular nightclub in the ’50s. She personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him - and it was true, due to Marilyn’s superstar status - that the press would go wild. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman - a little ahead of her time. And she didn’t know it.”

Women are sexualized and objectified to appeal to others. Our culture tells us that our sexuality doesn’t belong to us, nor is it for us to enjoy -– it’s for The Male Gaze. Therefore, the act of a lady pleasing herself for her own purposes presents a little bit of a problem for The Patriarchy, which thinks that women are supposed to be sexy for other people, not for themselves. The Patriarchy also wants us to believe that women are passive about sex, that we are not sexual creatures. Masturbating proves that wrong.
Let’s return to that quote up there for a second as well:
“Higher self esteem…more positive body image…less sexual anxiety.”
When women feel these things, it’s harder to control them, to tell them what to do, to tell them how to change. Ultimately, masturbating is connected to self-respect, self-love, and sexual freedom, all things that challenge several mainstream notions of femininity.
Here’s the deal: Masturbating is fun, orgasms are good for you, and it makes misogynists uncomfortable. So get yourself a vibrator and start a revolution.
