The world is vast and meant for wandering.: Thoughts on Haiku No22

fieldsofordinary:

I remember the first time i saw that haiku, i was just starting to feel comfortable with my sexuality. I loved and tried to relate to the haiku, but i still couldn’t get past the persistent fear that i would wake up one day and realize “oh shit, i’m not gay after all” (which i know is completely…

I'm still figuring it out: Introducing We're Queer Out Here: Stories from small town and rural LGBT

queer-out-here:

Far too often, the narratives of small town and rural LGBT life have taken a back seat to the vision of urban queerness, in cities where spaces of acceptance, community, and organization are much more accessible. Those of us who grew up or currently live in small towns…

The Sims

echoflynn:

As weird as it may seem, before I accepted that I was queer, I still preferred to make lesbian couples when I’d play the Sims much more than straight couples. Looking back, I think I was creating virtual people to do what I thought I could never do: have a healthy relationship with another woman. I didn’t think it was a possibility for me.

Luckily I’ve come to think differently about that. :)

I’ve played the Sims for a long time. A few months ago, I was playing the Sims 3 and my 11-year-old brother asked me: “Why do you always make same-sex couples?”

I came out to him against my parents’ wishes, who thought I should wait until he was older. I did not wait and answered his questions honestly. He still asks me questions from time to time: what does ‘heterosexual’ mean, why aren’t gay people allowed to get married, etc.

He’s a wonderfully open-minded kid. I’m glad he’s my brother. :)

Law against homophobic hatred comes into effect in UK
A new law criminalising stirring up homophobic hatred comes into effect today. The law, which covers England and Wales, will punish offenders with up to seven years in jail or a fine. It brings protections for gay people in line with laws against racial and religious hatred.
Aggravation By Prejudice, which places homophobic attacks on the same footing as racist crime, takes effect today, after being lobbied for by Stonewall. It outlaws incitement of hate - in any form - based on a person’s gender, sexual orientation or disability.
Stonewall chief executive Ben Summerskill said:
“The newly-extended criminal offence of incitement to hatred will go some way towards addressing the hatred and violence directed towards lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in Britain at a time when homophobic attacks are on the increase.
It sends a strong signal that such behaviour is unacceptable in a civilised society. Just like race, a person’s sexual orientation is an intrinsic characteristic for which no citizen should ever feel under threat of verbal or physical violence.”

“News, analysis, and fact-checking of anti-gay rhetoric” says the site. When people are being mean and denouncing queers, BTB is there checking it out. I use this site to keep track of LGBT issues around the world. It’s pretty handy if a little long-winded.

Sometimes I think I would have a lot of fun as a drag king. Maybe I should meet one first though.

Reporters have you in their Rolodexes under “lesbian comma artist” and whenever they need one for a quick quote, you get awkward voice mails asking, what do you think should be done about gay marriage? You don’t call back because you know the goverment has a bad track record with love, and that love and taxes make incompatible kissers, and that religion and goverment should go sit in the coatroom and think about the mistakes they’ve made. But you have three toes in the real world, watching the boy-choir of lesbos sing “We Belong” by Pat Benatar while two queer girls exchange cupcake-tongued vows, and your heroine watches you cry, because a complex emotion is always a gorgeous one. And in the shadows of a right-wing uprising, getting stronger in ways that make you shut the TV off with a cold clammy hand, you tell the reporter that a good thing to do about gay marriage is to turn off the radio and ignore the newspapers and volunteer to be a pervy flower girl in a celebration of the excess of love, that you want to be in a room dancing drunk and celebrating anyone who will commit to anything. You say that the construct of love is too messy to pin down, too easy to mock. You are not an earnest love song but you are also no anthem.

Harvey Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California.
If I had to pick a famous person as my role model or hero, Harvey Milk would be it.

I have my very own Albus Dumbledore too (read: gay mentor with piercing blue eyes). No joke. I kid with him about it because he inspires his students all the time, just like the Headmaster did. He inspires the same loyalty in me as Dumbledore does with Harry. I was and still am the “go-to” person for information on him or his whereabouts.
