Burnout is a risk in any field but it’s especially prevalent in the social justice movement. There are lots of theories for this. Some think it’s because we give more than we’re ever given back. Others argue it’s the working conditions—long hours, a lack of institutional support for self-care, or the tendency for nonprofits to take on more than they can accomplish. I think it’s deeper than all that. As activists and organizers our role is to study where our society has failed and then generate creative solutions to fix it. We are students of violence, oppression, and harm. What most people spend their time tuning out we actively work to tune in. This can get depressing, especially when our gains might feel too minimal, or our efforts too small. Often we don’t have a space to process our feelings about this, or we feel guilty for having them. Soon physical ailments appear and the stress gets the best of us. We no longer feel inspired and our work becomes stale, unoriginal, and brittle. It’s a common story…

no victory is too small to celebrate by doing a silly dance around your living room while wearing only socks and underwear.

Stop bitching. Start a revolution.: We are outnumbered.

When you step outside the circle of anarchy, the circle of radicals, the righteous, it becomes so BLATANT just how true the phrase “the masses are asses” is. It’s daunting. The vast majority of our society is at least one of the following: racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. I mean, SO MANY PEOPLE are sexist and don’t have a clue that they are. And when you step outside of that circle and realize a sea of people like that awaits you, it’s overwhelming. All I want to do is open eyes, change something, help people understand, but it seems the LOT of them are avidly against you. Go to one random forum, tell someone that saying something like “you and you’re bleeding vagina are overreacting!” is a misogynist comment and spell the word ‘womyn’ and I PROMISE you there will be a huge slew of comments mocking you for that. Womyn telling you they don’t see the misogyny there. (I mean like, seriously, are you blind?) Tons of oh-so-self-righteous keyboard-ready internet-heads just so eager to mock you, to one up themselves by making sure you know how ridiculous they think you are. The amount of people, this slew, that always shows in large numbers, seem so vast compared to those of us that get it that it overwhelms me. I feel like, what the fuck can I do? You know? I can only open up so many minds, if any! There will be such a large amount of ignorance left.

It is painful because I will always have to deal with that. Being aware is painful because I can never un-see all the things I’ve realized. I will always be alert and aware of all the ridiculous things most people participate in. It is daunting and draining and hopeless. Yet I am forever committed to speaking my truth. It’s like I’m bound to be exhausted.

RSA Animate - Crises of Capitalism (via boiteaoutils)

After studying critical/marxist social theory indirectly for so long, I recently decided to crack open The Communist Manifesto.  I’m surprised by how fun of a read it is, especially when compared with how dry the academic discussion of it tends to be.  This video, largely the drawings, seem a close parallel to the fun, dare I say humor, of Marx’s original work.
